Spain, 14 September: retirees lining up to book next June's trip
A colleague said his mother was up first thing on 14 September, sitting by the telephone, in order to book a seaside trip for June 2027. Sales for this season of Spain's IMSERSO senior travel programme began that day.
A travel scheme made for older people
IMSERSO is the body in Spain responsible for older people and social services, and its travel programme has been running for many years. The rules for this season (2026-2027) are roughly as follows:
- Places allocated by province: 879,213 places are on offer nationwide this season, of which 440,284 are for coastal mainland routes, 228,142 for island routes and 210,787 for short «escape the everyday» routes. Places are distributed across the provinces in proportion to the population aged over 65, and for the first days of sales you can only book within the quota allocated to your own province.
- Staggered start: from 14 September, priority users in Andalusia, Aragon, Castile and León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Melilla, Navarre and La Rioja book first, with non-priority users following on the 15th; anyone wanting a destination other than their first choice has to wait another two days.
- A low-price tier: 7,447 places are reserved for low-income pensioners at a flat price of 50 euros, with the rest covered by IMSERSO.
- Trips and prices: lengths range from 4 to 10 days, including transport and accommodation, and most routes provide full board; prices vary with the period and the route — a provincial capital in low season, 4 days and 3 nights, is about 132.91 euros; the Canary Islands in high season, 10 days including transport, is about 564.72 euros. The whole travel window is set between October 2026 and June 2027, deliberately avoiding the peak of high summer.
Why older people are happy to travel out of season
October to the following June is the most comfortable stretch along Spain's coast: mild weather, few tourists, low prices, and neither the restaurants nor the beaches crowded. This arrangement writes «off-peak» into the system — rather than having older people compete for places in high season, it gives them a stretch of time that is roomy to begin with.
The idea is in fact a very old one. In the Chinese lunar calendar, the Double Ninth Festival on the ninth day of the ninth month falls this year on 18 October (according to the Gregorian-to-lunar conversion table published by the Hong Kong Observatory), and its core custom is climbing a height: when the autumn air is crisp, you walk up somewhere high. Nine is regarded in traditional numerology as a yang number, and two nines together carry the sense of «jiu jiu», «enduring»; the day was later also designated a day for older people. Arranging an outing for one's elders has always meant picking the most comfortable stretch.
Going out: older people and children look at different things
When young people go out they look at the destination; when older people go out they look at whether they can bear it — how far the journey is, whether they can keep walking, how much walking there is in a day. IMSERSO packing a trip into a fixed route including transport and accommodation means absorbing the uncertainty in advance; what is saved is not money, it is worry.
My colleague said his mother ended up booking the Galician coast, on the grounds that «it's cooler there». A plain reason, but a very solid one.
About «choosing a day»
Travelling off-season is a choice in the statistical sense: fewer people, lower prices, steadier weather. Traditional day-selection speaks an entirely different logic — days carry their auspicious and inauspicious points, and you take a look before setting out. Each set of sayings has its own boundary: the first can be verified, the second provides a sense of order.
