Three Minutes Before the Ticket Rush: the "Good Luck" Ritual of Audiences in China's Taiwan Region
At 9:57 on the morning of 17 September 2026, a friend sent a photo to the group: a phone, a tablet and a laptop lined up side by side on the table, with a small pouch obtained at a temple pressed down beside them.
Concert density in China's Taiwan region has been high these two years. Take BIGBANG's twentieth-anniversary world tour, which straddles 2026–2027: the Kaohsiung shows are set for 27 and 28 February 2027, and ticket sales run in stages by eligibility — from 7 to 11 September 2026 members first fill in a survey, at 10 a.m. on 17 September official members get priority purchase, then 18 September is for credit-card holders, 19 September for co-branded cardholders, and general sale opens at 10 a.m. on 22 September; the whole run is personally ID-registered, with a maximum of 4 tickets per member per show (according to the official Kham ticketing pages, as of this article's filing on 17 September 2026; later stages follow the ticketing platform's announcements).
In other words, whether you can buy a ticket is decided first by which batch you are sorted into.
Under those rules the ritual appears: wash your hands before the sale; close every window eating bandwidth; switch devices, network and account back to "the set-up that worked last time"; put a lucky charm in your pocket, or go to a temple the day before. The powers people ask for luck from locally are the God of Wealth and the Earth God; students pray to Wenchang, and ticket-grabbers pray to whatever is at hand — temples usually do not mind and only remind you to "remember to return the favour".
Do these actions really produce more tickets? No. The number of tickets was settled before you clicked in. But they do something else: they turn the anxiety of "there is nothing I can do" into "at least I am prepared". Psychology classifies this kind of behaviour as the illusion of control — it shows up before exams, before matches, before draw nights, and it does lower the level of tension.
