How to Choose a Tarot Spread: One Question, One Spread
Someone asked me: "is there a tarot spread that is accurate at a glance?"
I said yes, one.
Her eyes lit up.
I said: one card. Draw one, and that is enough.
First, Get to Know the Cards in Your Hand
A tarot deck is normally made of two parts: 22 Major Arcana, numbered 0 to 21, and 56 Minor Arcana divided into four suits (Source 1). Together, 78 cards.
The Major Arcana are usually used to speak about states and stages; the Minor Arcana stay closer to concrete people, events and situations. What a spread does is assign positions to those cards: which one speaks about the past, which about the present, which about what the other person is thinking.
A Spread Is the Skeleton of the Question
The three-card spread is the most commonly used: the familiar reading is past–present–future, and there is also a reading of situation–obstacle–advice.
Spreads with more cards, such as the ten-card classic layout, break the question down further: your side, the other side, the external environment and the outcome each take a position.
There is really only one principle for choosing a spread: the number of positions has to match how clear your question is.
If the question is only "should I change jobs", three cards are exactly right; with ten cards, you will be filling the last seven positions on feel alone, and what comes out looks rich but is in fact your own story being written.
Three Common Mistakes in Choosing a Spread
First, treating a spread as an "advanced option". More positions do not mean seeing deeper; they only mean giving yourself more room to explain.
Second, drawing with a different spread for the same question until the answer you want appears. That is not divination, it is picking and choosing.
Third, stuffing three matters into one question. "Should I resign, should I break up with him, should I move to another city" — no spread can answer a question like that, because it is really three questions.
My Own Order
Write the question first, in one sentence; then fix the positions, usually three; after drawing, do not rush to interpret — read the literal meaning of each card aloud once; only then read them together.
Once I used only two cards in a spread for a friend, and she asked why. I said it was because you only asked two questions, and the third card has nowhere to go.
Now, when someone asks me whether to draw a few more cards, I usually ask in return: which matter are you asking about. Most people cannot answer, because what they want to ask is in fact one matter, and they are only uneasy, wanting to draw a few more times to draw the unease away. Choosing how many cards a spread has comes down, in the end, to asking: have you broken this matter down clearly or not?
