Qi Men Dun Jia: How to Fix Direction and Timing in the Nine Palaces
I used to know Qi Men Dun Jia only from films and television: fingers counting off on the palm, a compass turning, mystery layered on mystery. What the four plates are

Origins
The techniques of Qi Men Dun Jia were gradually systematized through the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the related verses and specialist works became the main basis for later study. Early documents circulated mostly as oral formulas, interwoven with the traditions of military strategy and time selection, which is one source of the "mysterious" impression the method carries.
Its limits
Take purpose first: Qi Men is strongest at locating time and direction, but it is not limited to questions of travel and direction — it can ask about events as well, only with a different way of selecting useful element. Then precision: the hour-based and day-based schools differ in the time granularity they use and should not be mixed, and the time of the question has to stay consistent. Finally, it is a structured system of deduction, so it does not suit questions that demand exact numerical values.

Short-term matters, often those settled within the same day, usually suit the hour-based school; matters spanning a longer period usually suit the day-based school.
