Exam Day: Everything an Elder Presses Into Your Hand Has Meaning

By the railing outside the exam hall, a parent stood holding a plastic bag: inside were rice cakes cut into small squares and a packet of sweets. I had always assumed they were to fill the stomach, until someone beside me murmured: “This is to ‘stick’ the answers for him.”

Exam-luck customs come in different regional versions

Korea calls its university scholastic ability test 수능 (suneung), and the sitting for the 2027 academic year is set for November 19, 2026. On exam day many families prepare malt candy and rice cakes, taking the sense of “sticking”; among soups, seaweed soup is avoided, because seaweed is “slippery” and is associated with “slipping away.” Japan has the “five-sided pencil”: ごかく (gokaku) is a homophone of “passing” (合格). There is also tonkatsu (カツ, katsu), eaten to take the sense of “certain victory.” In China there is “a youtiao plus two eggs equals a hundred points,” and eating zongzi to take the pun “hitting the mark.” All of this is folklore, with no single official source.

What “exam luck” looks at in the fortune systems

Folklore governs “what to do on the day”; the fortune systems govern “structure.” In traditional fate calculation, what relates to study and is most often mentioned are concepts such as the Resource Star (yin) and the Output Stars (shishang), along with symbolic stars such as “Wen Chang”—put plainly, the “Wen Chang position” means an orientation, in the desk and the study environment, that is held to be more favourable. It promises no score; it only offers a tidier environment. To look at it seriously, the site’s BaZi (Eight Characters) breaks your birth information into four pillars and ten gods, and then discusses the annual flow.

The thing that really helps

If you have pre-exam anxiety or ongoing insomnia, first see a teacher, a parent or a psychological counsellor—do not force yourself to push through. What 占卜迷指 can do is ask clearly what you are actually worried about, then recommend a suitable method, cast and interpret the chart, and export the result.

Sugar can only stick to your teeth. The answers still have to be written by you.
