Reading Lenormand Combinations: The Method of Adjacent Pairs

A friend drew three Lenormand cards and, turning over the first, asked me what it meant.

I said: don't ask about single cards yet.

She laid the three out, and I said: now read the two adjacent pairs — you will find the question has turned into a sentence.

A Single Card Is a Noun; Neighbours Make a Sentence

The most striking thing about Lenormand is that it is not abstract.

Tarot card faces show symbolic scenes; Lenormand shows concrete objects and roles: rider, letter, tree, house, dog, ring, cloud, coffin, bouquet… Each card's meaning is relatively fixed, and the card face is itself a noun (Source 1).

Because they are nouns, reading them in combination comes naturally: two adjacent cards are read as a modifier plus a noun.

Letter + Rider: news arrives quickly.

Cloud + Tree: the matter is unclear, but it will grow slowly.

Ring + Cloud: there is uncertainty in the relationship.

With three cards or more, read them as a chain: the first modifies the second, and the second modifies the third.

Why Not Look Each Card Up in a Dictionary

Because with Lenormand the information lives in the relationships.

Reading one card at a time out of a dictionary goes like this: you draw the Rider — someone is coming; you draw the Cloud — things are not going smoothly; you draw the Tree — it will be slow. Put the three sentences together and you have three descriptions that have nothing to do with each other.

Read as combinations, the same three cards say something else: in the order Rider–Cloud–Tree, they say that something which was going to be quick met fog halfway and ended up slow; in the order Tree–Cloud–Rider, they say that a slow matter met fog and then suddenly moved.

The same set of cards in a different order tells a completely different story. That is why reading card by card loses the most important layer.

Three Practical Suggestions

First, write the nouns down. Turn each card into a single word in your own words, without consulting a book. This step forces you to use your own language instead of reciting someone else's explanation.

Second, read in pairs. Work through two cards at a time and turn each pair into a sentence.

Third, add one summary sentence. String those sentences into a single meaning and say it to the person asking in one sentence.

One Real Reading

A friend drew Ring–Cloud–Tree and asked about the direction of a relationship.

Reading them as combinations, I said: there is a part of the relationship you cannot see clearly at the moment; this will not have an answer soon, but it will grow slowly.

She paused for a moment and said that this was exactly her recent state — not bad, but unresolved, and it needed time.

I did not tell her the outcome. Lenormand gives you a sentence, and what a sentence can do is help you state the matter in front of you a little more clearly.
