What BaZi Compatibility Reading Looks At: A Matching Day Pillar Is Not a Smooth Marriage

An auntie came to me with her daughter's and the daughter's boyfriend's birth details and asked whether the two were compatible.

I asked her: what if they are, and what if they are not?

She said: if they are not compatible, they cannot be together.

That is how compatibility reading is most often asked about, and it is where the most care is needed.

What Compatibility Reading Actually Compares

The traditional approach sets two people's Four Pillars side by side and looks at three things in particular: the relationships among the earthly branches, whether the five phases complement each other, and whether the day pillars are suited to each other.

For "relationships" there is a ready-made set of rules. Among the earthly branches there are the six combinations: Zi and Chou combine into earth, Yin and Hai into wood, Mao and Xu into fire, Chen and You into metal, Si and Shen into water, and Wu and Wei form the central yin–yang combination into earth — schools write the transformed phase in this group slightly differently, and the wording here follows the entry cited (Source 1). There are also the three-combination structures, the three-meeting directional structures, and relationships such as clash and punishment (Source 1).

If the branches of two people's birth years stand in a six combination or a three combination, they are often said to "get along".

Combination Describes a Type of Relationship, Not Marital Quality

This is the point that most needs to be made clear.

A six combination among branches describes attraction and sticking together: two people come close easily and stay together easily. A branch clash describes opposite directions and pushing against each other.

Both are types of relationship, not a happiness score. Plenty of combination may mean the two are so stuck together that neither will step outside; plenty of clash may mean both have their own views and, on the contrary, keep their days clear and orderly.

The stable marriages I have seen in life include both six-combination ones and clashing ones. What really decides a life together is not the branches but how the two handle conflict when it comes.

The Parts That Get Overlooked

First, the tradition of compatibility reading is in fact looking at both sides: not only the two charts, but also the expectations of the two families. Who raises the matter is often more important than what the chart says.

Second, the real information lies in the details. How the two feel about money, how they divide housework, how they arrange holidays — none of this is on a chart, yet it weighs far more in a marriage than the branches do.

Third, if someone tells you "you are incompatible, don't go on", you can ask them in return: which position is incompatible, by which set of rules, and are there exceptions? Most people cannot answer the third question.

An Analogy I Often Use

Compatibility reading is like a medical check-up report, not a verdict.

A check-up report tells you which indicators run high and what to watch; it does not tell you that this person should not be alive.

If a couple really does want a compatibility reading, my advice is to treat it as a comparison: after setting the two charts side by side, look for the places you had already sensed but had never laid out on the table. Those unspoken parts are where the real value of compatibility reading lies.
