Does a Zodiac Clash Really Matter? Folk Custom and Chart Reading Give Two Answers

My cousin's relationship was almost ruined by a table of Chinese zodiac animals.

She was born in the Year of the Rabbit, her boyfriend in the Year of the Rooster. Her grandmother dug out a table: Rabbit and Rooster clash, so no.

The table had probably been screenshotted from a phone by some relative and printed out.

Where the Clash Comes From

The twelve zodiac animals are paired in order with the twelve earthly branches: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig, corresponding to Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu and Hai (Source 1).

Among the branches there are several kinds of relationship: the six combinations (Zi–Chou, Yin–Hai, Mao–Xu, Chen–You, Si–Shen, Wu–Wei), the three-combination structures and the three-meeting directional structures, as well as clash-control and punishment (Source 2).

A zodiac clash means that two branches stand in opposing positions — the rabbit and the rooster (Mao and You) are one such pair.

Folk Custom and Chart Reading: Two Ways of Handling It

At the level of folk custom, a clash is treated very heavily: not suited to each other, no marriage, be careful in your ben ming nian — almost a single sentence deciding everything.

In a complete chart-reading system, a clash is only one kind of relationship. Judging someone's marriage prospects draws on several layers — the Four Pillars, the five phases, the Ten Gods, the major fortune cycles — and a clash occupies one square among them; taking it out on its own to dismiss a relationship is like using one high reading in a check-up report to dismiss the entire report.

My cousin did marry her boyfriend in the end. Her grandmother now mentions this grandson-in-law often, and warmly. The turning point came at a family dinner — her boyfriend spent three hours helping in the kitchen.

What to Do When There Is a Clash

First, ask clearly which layer is clashing. Is it a zodiac clash in the birth year, or a clash in the day pillar? The latter carries more weight. Most people who come with a screenshot cannot actually tell the difference.

Second, look at the whole, not at a single item. Read all Four Pillars, and check whether six combinations or three combinations are present at the same time — often a clash carries a combination within it.

Third, be clear about what you want to do with it. If it is only for peace of mind — picking a good day, paying respects to Tai Sui — the folk-custom layer is enough; if you are going to use it to decide whether to spend your life with someone, then it has to be said plainly: this tool does not have that kind of resolution.

In the end, a clash is a resolution of one part in twelve. Whether two people suit each other is something a resolution of one part in twelve cannot measure.
