Reading a Zi Wei Compatibility Chart: Matching the Life Palace Against the Spouse Palace
The first time I read a compatibility chart for someone, I made a mistake.
I put the two people's charts side by side and pointed at the Spouse Palace on the right: look, this is the kind of partner this person expects.
The other person went quiet for a moment, then asked: and can the person on the left become that kind of partner?
I had no answer. I had only read half of it.
What a Zi Wei Compatibility Chart Compares
A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is laid out in twelve palaces, mapped along the stems and branches (Source 1). A compatibility reading puts two people's charts together and looks at how the palaces and stars on the two sides answer each other.
The comparison used most often is one person's Life Palace read against the other person's Spouse Palace, and the other half the other way round.
The Life Palace is "me", and the Spouse Palace is "the relationship I expect". What a compatibility reading actually does is cross four things: what kind of person A is, what kind of relationship A expects, what kind of person B is, and what kind of relationship B expects.
How to Compare
Step one: each person looks at their own Spouse Palace. This palace describes that person's default expectation of a relationship.
Step two: look at both Life Palaces, which means looking at what the two people are actually like.
Step three: put the two sets together — does B carry the qualities A expects, and does A carry the qualities B expects?
Step four: see whether the two land on each other. Where they do not, that is the part of the relationship that most needs to be said out loud in advance.
Where a Compatibility Reading Most Often Goes Wrong
The first mistake is treating expectation as fact. The Spouse Palace describes an expectation, not the other person. Plenty of misreadings come from turning "he expects this kind of person" into "he is this kind of person".
The second is comparing only one side. Read one chart alone and the conclusion is bound to be lopsided.
The third is treating the comparison as a marriage verdict. Its most suitable use is finding differences early: how money is spent, how housework is divided, where the boundary with each family of origin lies. These differences cast a shadow on the charts, but only sitting down and talking can settle them.
A Real Reminder
I know a couple who have been married for ten years, and their Spouse Palaces do not look especially "favourable" on paper. What really worked, they said, was a habit they formed in the third year of marriage: once a week they put the children aside and went out for a meal.
That meal is not on any chart. Yet it explains more than the two charts put together.
The best thing a compatibility reading can give you is not a conclusion but a list: the places the two of you have sensed do not line up, and have never talked about.
