Who Reads Whose Chart: Order and Misreadings in a Zi Wei Comparison

Someone sent me two charts with a request attached: see whether the two of them can get married.

I replied with one line: first tell me whose charts these are, and who is asking.

Those two pieces of information decide how I read — because in a compatibility reading, who is reading whose chart is not a small matter.

Read Each Chart Through First, Then Put Them Together

A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart has twelve palaces, mapped along the stems and branches (Source 1). The correct order for a compatibility reading is:

One, read A's chart through on its own first. What kind of person he is, and what kind of relationship he expects.

Two, read B's chart through on its own in the same way. The same two questions.

Three, only then put the two sets side by side and compare.

Skip the first two steps and go straight to overlaying the charts, and what you get is a pile of conclusions that restrain one another — and that are very easily swayed by the mood of the person asking. Whichever side he hopes holds up, that is the side he will unconsciously read towards.

Who Is Reading Whose Chart Comes First

A compatibility reading has two viewpoints.

The first takes A as the lead: read A's situation and A's place in the relationship, and B is the person occupying A's relationship palace.

The second takes B as the lead, and the whole viewpoint flips.

The same two charts, asked two ways, produce conclusions worded differently. That is not vagueness; a compatibility reading exists to serve the person asking. So settling "who is asking" at the very start saves more than half of the argument later.

The Three Most Common Misreadings

One, treating expectation as fact. The Spouse Palace describes the type of relationship this person expects, not what the other person is like. Read it as "this is what he is like" and the whole direction is wrong.

Two, treating the comparison as a verdict. What it is best suited to is finding differences: money, housework, the boundary with each family of origin. It is not suited to answering "can these two be together" — that is a question only the two people involved can answer.

Three, looking only at the palaces and not at the Four Transformations. The Four Transformations mark which layer of a relationship is being emphasised (Source 1); without them, a palace-by-palace comparison misses the most important layer of movement.

A Habit of Mine

When I read a compatibility chart I draw two columns on paper, writing "what A expects" on the left and "what B is actually like" on the right, then tick the places where the two line up.

After that, I usually talk to the person asking only about the places that cannot be ticked, because those are the parts of the relationship that genuinely need discussing. Where the two of them have already worked something out between themselves, whatever the chart says does not matter.

When I start a compatibility reading I say one sentence first: what follows is the expectation I have read off these two charts, not the facts about the two of you. Once that sentence is out, the conversation usually goes more easily.
