How to Use the Suitable-and-Avoid Entries of a Huangli: Why Two Almanacs Disagree

The year I got married, my mother sat comparing two huangli almanacs.

On the same day, one said "suitable for marriage" and the other said "avoid marriage". She stared at them for a long time and asked me: so can we or can't we?

I said: neither of them is wrong. They are using two different sets of conventions.

Where the Suitable-and-Avoid Entries Come From

The "suitable" and "avoid" entries in a huangli are part of the date-selection tradition. The date-selection entries in an almanac come with a set of terms, divided by use into several groups: those concerned with capping, marriage, mourning and sacrifice; those for building and moving; those for daily life and ceremonial celebrations, and so on (Source 1).

They are not written down at random. They are the result of working through a set of rules involving the stems and branches, the Twelve Duty Officers and the like.

Where the Version Differences Come From

The key point is this: there is more than one way to work out those results, and the conventions handed down in different printed editions and different schools are not the same either.

The "version dispute" over the huangli is itself a phenomenon that has been clearly recorded (Source 1). In other words, when two almanacs give opposite conclusions for the same day, it is not that one of them was misprinted; they were never the same set of algorithms to begin with.

So the correct answer to my mother's question is: it depends which one you believe — or rather, which one you care about more.

Three Safe Ways to Use a Huangli

One: treat it as a reference calendar, not as a basis for decisions. Suitable-and-avoid entries are good for picking a date, not for settling a life. Moving home, inviting guests or taking a photo — using it costs nothing there. Starting a company, signing a contract or having surgery — do not take the almanac as your basis.

Two: when one day carries two different readings, do not agonise over which is right. Pick a version you trust and stay with it, so that at least your convention is stable.

Three: see clearly what it is actually saying. Some entries read "suitable for sacrifice" or "suitable for prayer", and those folk activities have nothing to do with you; what you want is the column that corresponds to your own matter.

One Small Thing

In the end we chose a day that both almanacs marked "suitable".

Not because that day was more auspicious, but because on that day my mother would not have to open the almanacs again. She was happy the whole way through the wedding — and I think that is probably the most practical layer of use the date-selection tradition has.

There is no column in a huangli for "the safest day to make a decision". What it has is suitable and avoid, while a decision needs grounds — and those two things belong in different columns to begin with.
