How to Read a Year's Fortune: the Zodiac Animal Is Only the First Layer

Every year around the Start of Winter, messages of the same kind start coming in: I am an X next year — how will my fortune go?

I have never answered this kind of question. Not because it is hard to answer, but because the way it is put is missing three quarters of the information.

How a Zodiac Annual Fortune Is Worked Out

The twelve zodiac animals correspond one to one with the twelve earthly branches (Source 1).

What is called a zodiac annual fortune uses the relationship between the branch of your birth year and the branch of the year in question: when the two are the same, the year is a ben ming nian; when they sit in opposite positions, it is a clash.

The relationships between earthly branches are not limited to the clash. There are also the six combinations — Zi and Chou, Yin and Hai, Mao and Xu, Chen and You, Si and Shen, Wu and Wei — and the three-combination structures, for example Shen, Zi and Chen forming a water group, and Si, You and Chou forming a metal group (Source 2).

So strictly speaking, "what animal am I, and how will next year go" can only produce a directional hint: combination or clash, and nothing more.

Why It Is Only the First Layer

Because a person's chart carries four pillars: the year pillar, the month pillar, the day pillar and the hour pillar (Source 3). The year branch is only one character among the eight.

Reading a year through the zodiac animal means using one character out of eight to look at a whole year. Its resolution is one twelfth.

Is it useful, then? Yes — as a first screening. If your birth-year branch clashes with the branch of the year, you can at least expect more moments of being pushed along than usual.

Three Steps for Reading a Year

First, look at the relationship before looking at good or ill. Combination and clash describe types of relationship: combination is sticking, gathering; clash is movement, dispersal. In themselves they carry no good or bad.

Second, look at which of the four pillars it lands on. When a year branch clashes, whether it clashes with the year pillar or the day pillar corresponds to different stages of life.

Third, only then look at the concrete matter. A year is better asked about as "is next year a good time to sign a long contract" or "are the next six months a good time to move house", rather than "will next year be good".

An Example I Often Give

One reader asked me, in three ben ming nian years in a row, whether that year would go badly for her. In the fourth year she changed the question: should I sit that exam this year?

I did not cast anything. I asked her one thing: how long have you been preparing?

She said two years.

I said: then go and sit it.

She passed. The zodiac fortune written online for her year was not good — but that certificate was her own.

A zodiac fortune can serve as the first layer, but what decides whether something can be done is usually how long you have prepared for it.
