Does Ben Ming Nian (Your Own Zodiac Year) Really Matter? Tai Sui and the Twelve-Year Cycle

About 5 minutes 占卜迷指 Chinese zodiacBen Ming NianTai SuiAnnual fortune

My aunt has been sending me red underwear since I was very small.

Every time my ben ming nian came round, a parcel arrived. She never said why.

Which Year Is the Ben Ming Nian

The twelve zodiac animals pair in order with the twelve earthly branches: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig correspond to Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu and Hai (Source 1).

When your zodiac animal is the same as the animal of the current year, that year is called a ben ming nian. Because the twelve earthly branches run in a cycle, a ben ming nian comes once every twelve years.

What Tai Sui Really Is

In folk custom, a ben ming nian is said to offend Tai Sui, and this Tai Sui is not a name picked out at random in the sky.

Traditionally, Tai Sui is bound up with Sui Xing, the Year Star. Volume 3 of the 《钦定协纪辨方书》 (Qinding Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu) says that "Tai Sui is the Year Star", and that Tai Sui moves on earth in step with the Year Star in the sky; Tai Sui therefore corresponds to the Year Star, that is, Jupiter (Source 2).

There is a further layer: the direction in which Jupiter orbits is exactly opposite to the direction of traditional Chinese year counting. To resolve that contradiction of direction, the ancients devised a virtual Tai Sui moving the other way, to match the Year Star, and then paired it with the stem-and-branch calendar: one full cycle is sixty years, so there are sixty Tai Sui names in all (Source 2).

In other words, Tai Sui is a "year-counting partner" that was invented. What it originally solved was a calendar problem.

The Red Items and Those Customs

A red belt, red underwear, red socks — these belong to the folk-custom layer. What they share is that they cost little, are easy to carry out, carry a sense of ritual, and are mostly harmless.

But two things are worth spelling out:

First, folk custom and chart-based fate reading are two different things. A ben ming nian is taken very seriously at the folk level, but inside a complete system of reading a chart it is only one layer of information about the year. A person's four pillars contain year, month, day and hour; looking only at the year branch is looking at one quarter of the picture.

Second, it should not be treated as a risk warning. I have seen people postpone changing jobs, avoid long journeys, or refuse to sign a contract because of a ben ming nian. Postponement itself has a cost, and its benefit cannot be measured.

What I Do Myself

I keep accepting the red underwear, and I wear it. When an aunt sends something, putting it on is simply doing as she asks.

I did not hold back on a single thing I meant to do. The year I changed jobs was in fact a ben ming nian: signing the contract, moving house and interviews all happened in that year. Looking back now, it was the best year of my last ten.

So does a ben ming nian really matter? My answer is that it matters in folk custom and does not matter for what you do. Wear the red underwear, and get on with the work.
